A raging whimper :O(

I'm very upset.  Traumatized almost.

I went to my new doc a fortnight ago because my voice has been weak and wonky for months and I finally got fed up with people asking if I was poorly.  He listed a number of possible causes such as heartburn or polyps and such like and suggested I see a specialist at my local nhs hospital.  Following that I've now had a letter telling me to go in for further tests and possibly a biopsy or removal of a nodule on my vocal chords under anaesthetic a week next Thursday.  So far so ok BUT the letter says that I'll be in a mixed sex bay.

Now I'm an extremely modest person and there's no way I can agree to that.  The very thought of being in a bed next to strange men makes my innards curdle, never mind the embarrassment and humiliation of those dreadful gaping hospital nighties. I just can't do it.  I'm not going to.
The letter's in the bin.

Soz for the gloomy entry but I've no-one I care to load this on in real life.

I hate hospitals full stop and male wards and the whole ethos - I would love to be in mixed word if such a thing was possible - would be a gentler experience. I too am extremely modest............

I think it's a disgrace that mixed wards exist at all in UK hospitals and I can appreciate how you feel.  However, I'd be interested to know, what are the implications of just leaving things as they are?

A mixed ward is where men and women are accommodated in different bays, ie 4 bed large rooms off a corridor.  A mixed sex bay is where when you open your eyes after anaesthetic there's a strange man you've never seen before, and who may or may not be a gentleman, watching you from the next bed 4' away.
As for leaving things as they are, I guess I shall have to keep my fingers crossed and start saving.  I really can't think in a balanced way about it all just now.  Thanks for commenting anyways  :O)

I would write to your GP or go and see him/her and say exactly what you have just written. I so totally agree with you. Stand by your rights!  Pam.

At least the 'mixed' sex wards here you're still seperated in different rooms/bays on the ward...I'd have died if i'd been put in a room with some strange bloke when i was rushed in with my gall bladder...Actually i was only one in the room for enough hours to have someone eventually see me and give me pain relief...One of my full length support stockings kept falling down and i was in one of those ridiculous hospital robes until someone could bring me some clothes...I don't agree with mixed sex rooms/bays at all...Am sure there are plenty men (cept Stuart) who think the same as most women do...In saying that i hope they do find what is wrong and get it fixed asap
